Bird Song (White) detail 2020

Note:

In addition to including web addresses to appropriated elements, I also include links in these works to songs found on YouTube. In both Bird Song paintings, the selected folk song is about birds in migration. It originates from the Csángó people who are a Hungarian ethnographic group living mostly in the Romanian region of Moldavia.

Many ethnographers consider the Csángó people to hold intact some of the oldest and most authentic elements of Hungarian culture. I find this fascinating because the Moldavia region has never actually been part of Hungary over its 1000-year history. What does it mean for an entity to locate part of its core outside of itself?
