Materials: antique Hungarian weaving from Croatia, hand-embroidered pattern form Hungary, and machine-embroidered text Note: Both Bird Song (White) and Bird Song (Red) combine antique ‘Hungarian’ weavings produced in locations outside the nation’s current borders with embroidery patterns from a region within modern Hungary. While the original patterns also date to the turn of the 20th century, they are hand embroidered by me. I focus on folk traditions precisely because they seem to defy nationalistic borders by existing both inside and outside of them. My inclusion of the web address to the location of each artifact, as found on the internet, further complicates conversations about origin.
